Final Project Musings

Reflections: Five Things I Learned

What I learned from this project is, well a lot. I'm not sure where to begin but to start, I learned that I like typography more than I thought. The second thing I learned is that the printing process is a process in and of itself -- that it's important to prepare before hand for final prints, whether its color, or margins, or the layout of your publication. On the subject of typography, I learned that I definitely have my favorite fonts and that it might be fun for me to experiment with new fonts. I think if I use Avenir one more time, someone is going to call me out for it. I also learned a lot about how to keep consistent rules and a consistent layout while still remaining creative. This project really solidified my understanding of the grid, how to adhere to it, but how to also break from it when necessary. Moving forward, I would like to get more creative in photographing my final project.

Reflections: Five Things I Should Have Learned

I should have learned that I need to plan things better to save myself more time. I should have learned that a little bit of negative space isn't a bad thing. A lot of my compositions are filled to the brim with stuff -- I would like my publication to have a little more breathing room. I also should have learned how to do foldouts, half pages, and all that other fun stuff. In the interest of time I wasn't able to explore those things, but in the future I definitely look forward to it. I also wish I would have experimented with color earlier on.
